Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have been used for many years in the treatment of various and wide ranging health issues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is simply a way of increasing the level of oxygenation in the blood and tissues of the body by breathing high concentrations of oxygen at a pressure higher than normal atmospheric pressure. The process takes about 90 minutes during which time the patient is sitting inside a pressure chamber. The patient can relax, listen to music or read whilst enjoying this relaxing and painless procedure.
Whilst the patient is breathing concentrated oxygen the oxygen level of the blood is significantly increased. Importantly, the level of oxygen in the blood plasma is very much increased by a factor X10 which means that oxygen can access all the tissues of the body including the lymph system.
A hyperbaric oxygen chamber works by delivering 100% oxygen to a patient in a pressurised environment, typically 1.5 to 3 times normal atmospheric pressure. This high-pressure setting allows the lungs to absorb much more oxygen than under normal conditions, which enhances the amount of oxygen delivered to tissues throughout the body. The increased oxygen levels accelerate healing, promote tissue repair, and help fight infections.
Since oxygen is at the core of all cellular energy it is also essential for healing. The benefits of this are progressive through several treatments and include:
