So You Want to Start a Ketogenic Diet?

There are many compelling reasons to consider a ketogenic diet—for improved health, greater longevity, and relief from a range of chronic symptoms often dismissed as just signs of “getting older.”

The modern diet, heavy in convenience and highly processed foods, can wreak havoc on digestion and overall nutrition. Processing often strips away the healthy parts of food—essential minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Foods marketed as “fat-free” are often filled with sweeteners, artificial flavourings, and preservatives.

Preservatives extend shelf life (think sliced bread), but they work by killing off bacteria. Once consumed, these preservatives continue that job in your gut—wiping out not just harmful microbes, but the beneficial ones too. Simply reducing or eliminating packaged, bagged, and barcode-laden foods gives your gut a chance to rebalance and restore a healthy biome.

Most people now recognise that excess sugar is a major health hazard. What’s less commonly understood is that carbohydrates like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, biscuits, and cakes are essentially sugar in disguise—chains of sugar molecules that break down quickly once eaten. This leads to spikes in blood glucose and insulin levels.

We’re also conditioned to eat three meals a day, a habit heavily encouraged by the food industry. Breakfast is often cereal (usually sugar-coated), offering a quick burst of energy with little nutrition. This quick hit wears off quickly, leaving you craving more sugar.

Lunch might be a sandwich, a bag of crisps, and a fizzy drink loaded with sugar. Snacks often include biscuits or chocolate bars. Dinner frequently features chips, rice, pasta, or pizza—again, mostly carbohydrates and sugars. In short, many people’s bodies are managing a near-constant sugar overload throughout the day.

Over time—often decades—this stresses the pancreas, which may eventually struggle to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels stable. Consistently high insulin levels lead to insulin resistance, where cells stop responding properly to insulin and can’t use sugar effectively for energy.

A well-structured ketogenic diet can change all of this. It can eliminate sugar and carb cravings, support weight loss, increase energy, and boost overall health. Best of all? You never have to feel hungry.
