At The Health Hub, we offer two powerful oxygen-based therapies that support healing, energy, and recovery: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT). Though different in approach, both therapies dramatically enhance the body’s oxygen supply—a critical ingredient for healing.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
What is HBOT and How Does It Work?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been used as far back as the 1600s. It involves breathing oxygen-enriched air under pressure, which helps deliver more oxygen to tissues throughout the body. This makes HBOT especially effective in treating conditions caused by low oxygen levels (hypoxia)—whether from poor circulation, illness, or injury.
Modern HBOT chambers come in two types:
-
Hard-wall chambers, typically operating at 2.0 ATA (Atmospheres Absolute) and up to 4.0 ATA for medical-grade treatments such as decompression sickness.
-
Soft-wall chambers, more common for wellness and ongoing therapies, usually operate up to 1.3 ATA.
At The Health Hub, we use a comfortable, single-occupancy soft-wall chamber with easy front access and a reclining chair. During the session:
-
You’ll breathe a combination of 95% pure oxygen (via mask) and the chamber’s ambient air (normally 21% oxygen).
-
This creates an effective oxygen mix of approximately 75%, delivered under pressure.
What Happens During a Session?
Each session lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes during which you can relax, read, or browse the internet. There’s a call button inside for your safety, and staff monitor your session closely.
The pressurised environment dramatically enhances oxygen absorption:
-
Blood oxygen levels can rise from below-normal (<95%) to as high as 99%.
-
Oxygen in plasma—normally only 3%—can increase up to 33%, allowing it to reach areas red blood cells can’t, like the endothelial lining of blood vessels.
This is crucial for healing hard-to-reach tissues, particularly in cases of:
-
Poor circulation (e.g., leg ulcers)
-
Stroke recovery, even 12–18 months after the event
-
Long COVID and vaccine-related symptoms
While some improvement (like clearer thinking or reduced fatigue) may be noticed after a single session, we recommend a minimum of 10 sessions for lasting, cumulative benefits.
Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT)
What Is EWOT and How Does It Work?
Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT) is a newer, active form of oxygen therapy that combines gentle movement with high-flow oxygen. It’s especially effective for people who can perform light exercise, such as walking at a comfortable pace.
Each 20-minute session includes:
-
5-minute warm-up without oxygen (e.g., walking at 100–110 bpm), which increases heart rate and breathing depth.
-
15 minutes of exercise with an oxygen mask delivering high-concentration oxygen.
This combination:
-
Pumps oxygen-rich blood to every organ, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.
-
Activates carbon dioxide (CO₂) production, which is essential for helping red blood cells release oxygen efficiently.
Interestingly, we’ve seen clients with 99% oxygen saturation still experience symptoms of low oxygen. Why? Because low CO₂ levels from inactivity can prevent oxygen from being released where it’s needed. EWOT reactivates this oxygen/CO₂ exchange mechanism—and the body seems to retain this effect for weeks after treatment.
What Does It Help With?
EWOT can:
-
Make exercise feel easier and less tiring
-
Reduce aches, pains, and breathlessness
-
Help people with angina or COPD move more freely
-
Support heart recovery and improve breathing efficiency
-
Assist in detoxing, especially for those undergoing chemotherapy, when combined with PEMF and Infrared Light Therapy
Even those who struggle with physical activity can benefit, as the intensity can be tailored to their needs—regardless of age or fitness level. Many clients feel real results within just 1 to 3 sessions.
Both HBOT and EWOT offer remarkable ways to enhance healing, energy, and recovery. Whether you need deep-tissue oxygenation from a pressurised chamber or want to supercharge your workouts with high-flow oxygen, The Health Hub is here to help.
