Can Oxygen Therapy Support PTSD Recovery?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a complex mental health condition that can arise after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. Common symptoms include flashbacks, heightened anxiety, sleep disturbances, and emotional numbness. While conventional treatments such as therapy and medication are often effective, researchers and integrative health practitioners are now exploring complementary approaches—like oxygen therapy—to support the healing process.

What Is Oxygen Therapy?
Oxygen therapy, specifically Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (EWOT), involves breathing concentrated oxygen – HBOT in a pressurised chamber and EWOT while lightly exercising on a treadmill or bike. This process increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, promoting faster healing, reducing inflammation, and encouraging the regeneration of damaged tissues—including those in the brain.

The Brain and PTSD
PTSD can lead to lasting changes in brain function, particularly in areas involved in fear regulation, memory, and emotional control. Some emerging studies suggest that HBOT and/or EWOT may help by:
  • Improving blood flow and oxygenation to the brain
  • Reducing neuroinflammation, which is linked to many mental health conditions
  • Enhancing neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to heal and form new connections

What the Research Says
Early clinical trials have shown promising results, some PTSD sufferers have reported improvements in sleep, mood, and cognitive function after a series of HBOT sessions. That said, oxygen therapy is not a standalone cure—but it may serve as a valuable complement to trauma-informed care.
